The event is planned for noon on Saturday, June 17, 2006, at the Hyatt Regency Columbus. The Rt. Rev. William G. Burrill, retired bishop of Rochester, and the Rt. Rev. John M. The Standing Commission on Stewardship and Development and The Episcopal Network for Stewardship (TENS) are hosting a dinner that will honor three outstanding leaders who, each in their own way, have significantly influenced the ministry of stewardship in the Episcopal Church. The dinner, to be held at the Hilton Minneapolis, 1001 Marquette Avenue, will begin with a reception and cash bar at 6:00 p.m. Awards recognizing each of the recipients as Apostles in Stewardship will be presented immediately following the dinner. The honorees were selected by the Board of Directors of TENS to represent individuals over the age of 70 who have significantly contributed to the development of stewardship ministry programs throughout the Church. This year's Apostles in Stewardship are: the Rev. Charles E. Gearing, of the Diocese of Atlanta; the Rt. Rev. Furman C. Stough, retired bishop of the Diocese of Alabama; and the Rev. William A. Yon, also of the Diocese of Alabama. Deacon Gearing, Director of Diocesan Programs for The Episcopal Church Foundation, has been a highly successful consultant in stewardship and planned giving since 1991. He co-authored Funding Future Ministry (Morehouse), and is the author of its recently completed companion manual, A Diocesan Gift Planing Program Guidelines for Success (Morehouse). Many are familiar with the "Alabama Plan." We are pleased to be honoring the principal creators of this program, the Rt. Rev. Furman C. "Bill" Stough and the Rev. William A. "Bill" Yon. Implementation of this often imitated program has kept the Diocese of Alabama at or near the top of diocesan giving statistics for many decades. Tom Gossen, Executive Director of TENS, commented, "After considering the list of possible honorees, we realized that the number of awards at this celebration could easily have been doubled. That's encouraging, because we know we'll have more folks to honor in 2006!" Individuals are encouraged to send congratulatory comments to the honorees by way of TENS' office. Notes and cards received will be presented at the event on August 1. Financial gifts to TENS in honor of the Apostles in Stewardship are also welcomed and will be designated to assist with underwriting the costs of the event. Invitations with a response form are being mailed to each deputy and bishop within the next three weeks. Seating is limited, and early reservations are encouraged. Tickets will be available by advance purchase only, not at the door. The cost will be $50 for those who make and guarantee their reservation(s) prior to July 25, 2003, and $55 for those who purchase tickets in Minneapolis. Tables of eight can be reserved for $500. In a society where charities, foundations, the arts and countless other worthwhile programs compete with our churches for contributions, it is critically important that the leaders of congregational Stewardship Ministries be focused and skillful in order to effectively finance God's work in the world. Stewardship is much more, however, than the church's annual fund-raising campaign: it is an attitude and a way of life that develops alongside growth in faith. Church leaders who understand this build formation programs that allow church members to increase both in love and joy. The Episcopal Network for Stewardship is a voluntary network of people who understand the important role of leadership in calling the Church to a faithful response to God's call to generously share of our time, talents and treasures to provide for God's work in the world. The purpose of TENS is (1) to lead in the growth of a network of dedicated stewardship ministers serving congregations and dioceses; and, (2) to support each other with personal consultations and fellowship opportunities, as well as print, video and electronic resources.
